CAPTAINS The USS LEJEUNE (AP74) was launched as WINDHUK by Bloom
& Voss Co. Hamburg, Germany for Deutsche-Africa line in 1936, interned at Santos,
Brazil in December 1939; acquired from Brazil May 12, 1942; placed in ferry commission as
LeJeune on March 26, 1943. Captain John T. Bottom, Jr. was in command during
her transfer from Rio de Janerio to Norfolk for the conversion.
The LEJEUNE was commissioned on May 12, 1944
with Captain L.E. Kelly in command. Captain Kelly remained in
command until February 15, 1945.
F.W. McDonald,
Captain, USN replaced him on February 15, 1945 to February 8, 1946.
Following was S.H.,Thompson, Captain
USNR from February 8. 1946 to July 23rd, 1946.
Captain C.A. Chappell, USN followed
from July 23, 1946 to July 30 1947.
Captain D.S. Evans, USN assumed
duties on July 3, 1947 to November, 8, 1947.
